Music Video - Goodwin Analysis

Day 26 - Since You've Been Gone

I will be analysing Day 26's music video for the single "Since You've Been Gone" which is on their first album.
The genre it represents is R&B Boy Band and this is shown by:

  • beauty shots
  • looking directly at camera
  • night-time city with bright lights
  • coordinated style/ band image
  • shots of individual band members
  • shots with entire band together
  • both fades and some cuts to beat
  • females but not presented as sexualised objects
  • singing directly to camera
  • emotion shown on faces
  • some choreographed dance moves but looks natural

What is the relationship between the lyrics and visuals?
This music video is mostly performance and the narrative it does have is slightly illustrative of the lyrics of the song. The song is about the feelings of a man who has just broken up with his girlfriend/wife and wants her back.
At the end of the video, we see the band exit the elevator and see their partners - this is indication that the partners were gone which is illustrative of the lyrics.
However, the video doesn't make many references to the lyrics, it is mostly showing off the band as this is their first music video.

What is the relationship between the music and visuals?
In some places, the video cuts to the beat of the music, however there are a lot of quick fades to black and then to the next shot. This type of editing fits in with the moderate tempo, genre and theme of the song.
The solo instrumental bit at the beginning of the video is illustrated by a "helicopter ride" shot of New York, beauty shots of the band and introducing the location; a hotel where we see the band pull up in a car and enter the building.
During the bridge of the song which is slightly faster paced, the pace of the video also increases. This happens when Robert is playing the piano during the hook and the shots cut faster.

Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs?
The record company is looking to sell this track as the introduction of the band and as a taster to things that the audience can expect from them.
The band is shown as sexy and cool. The video contains so many beauty shots of the members of the band.
The videos for tracks by this artist are quite similar to this one; they contain many beauty shots as well as females but there isn't a lot of emphasis on the females. The main part of the music video is the band and promoting their image.

Is there reference to the notion of looking?
There are quite a few notions of looking; especially the females looking at the band members but as this music video is their debut video, there are mostly shots of the band singing and looking directly to camera.

Is this music video performance-based, narrative-based or concept-based?
It could be said that there is a small amount of narrative in this video but overall it is performance based.
