Music Video - Genre Analysis
One of the most important things a music video must have in order to be successful is genre signifiers. Without these, the music video may not reach its target audience and therefore will not fulfil its purpose of promoting the music and the artist.
Evanescence - Bring Me To Life
There are many genre signifiers within this music video:
- darkness
- night-time city scene
- pale female singer with dark hair, piercings
- contrasting colours - black and white and red
- "haunting" voice
- male band - jeans, black t-shirts, tattoos, piercings
- guitars and drums
- "aggressive" movements and dancing
- male lead singer - tattoos, dyed hair, piercings
- "screaming" singing
Overall, this music video definately makes me think that this is the ROCK genre.
50 Cent - P.I.M.P ft Snoop Dogg, G-Unit
- white theme
- emphasis on clothes, jewellery and flashy cars - to show money
- sexualised image of women
- "pimp" cane
- man with women following him, attending to his every need
- the females are looking at him
- females in bikinis and scantily dressed - seen as objects
- females in lingere with dog collars
The signifiers in this music video make me think this is of the Hip-Hop/ Rap genre.
