Artist Development - Tinie Tempah
In 2006, he released his first music video for his song "Wifey" and it became an underground hit holding the "Channel U" Urban Chart top spot for 10 consecutive weeks.
The music video is very amateur and looks like a video for an artist who is trying to make it big in the music industry.
His next video was for his song "Hood Economics"
This video is of much better quality and looks more professionally made with effects such as having clones of the artist as well as using actual locations (Walthamstow dog racing track).
It is easy to see that at this time, Tinie Tempah was becoming a bit more famous and established in the underground UK music industry.
In 2008, he released the video for "Tears". This video is definately a professional video but out of all his songs, it missed the "epic" feel and therefore did not become very popular
Tinie Tempah then disappeared for two years and signed to Parlophone records in late 2009. He came back into the public eye with a BANG and released the video for his single "Pass Out"
The song and the video were an instant hit and Tinie Tempah went from underground artist to mainstram sensation. It is the debut single from his soon to come album "Disc-Overy". The video on Parlophone's official Youtube channel has had over 11,500,00 views since it was uploaded on 23rd December 2009.
Since then, he has released two more music videos for other singles on his album "Frisky" and "Written in the Stars"
These videos have established Tinie Tempah as a mainstream artist with a new style that appeals to a wider audience. This is a perfect example of how the music video changes depending on how established the artist is.

Reflections
I really like the song that our group has chosen to make a music video for.
The fact that we have got permission from the artist and that the artist would like to feature in the music video means we have the opportunity to make an absolutely fantastic music video !
Our teacher has warned us that the RnB videos that have been made for projects in the past are missing something and don't seem to work. I think we should watch these videos as a group and try to pinpoint what went wrong so that we can avoid those mistakes when making our own video.

Website Analysis - Trey Songz
- "Trigga-Unit Cam" that shows exclusive behind the scenes footage of the artist
- a link to buy his new album "Passion, Pain & Pleasure"
- links to various social networking sites: twitter facebook and myspace.
There is also an opportunity for fans to sign up and receive updates and offers from Trey Songz and his record label. They can also join his fan club "Trey's Angels" where they will receive special exclusive gifts and competitions.
This website is very fan-based and contains different features that would make fans want to sign up and return to the website. It is a hub of information so that "die hard" fans will never miss out on any event.

Demi Lovato - Everytime You Lie
There are some initial ideas that come to mind when I listen to this song. It would be a mix of performance and narrative.

Trying to get a lcoation
For our music video, we want to have a club scene. I am friends with someone who is related to the owner of "Club Volts" in Edmonton. I have contacted him via facebook to ask him whether he thinks we would be able to use the club for our music video.

Possible "Plan B" track ideas
Our group now has a track choice but we are trying to decide on another track to use in case our initial idea doesn't work out (fingers crossed that doesn't happen)
For our "Plan B", we are considering many different genres, not just RnB or Hip-Hop

Final Groups
Well, it's now been finalised and for this music video project I will be working with Catharrin and Bianca.
Music Video - Vernallis Analysis
Trey Songz - last Time
Vernallis' theory centres around 4 key concepts that all relate to the way the music video is constructed. These are:
- Narrative
- Editing
- Camera Movement and framing
- Diegesis
Trey Songz - Last Time
Narrative
This music video is mostly narrative with some performance in between of Trey Songz singing directly to the camera. It is almost a direct visual response to the music. In this example, the structure of the music video does not appear disjointed and it is the narrative that drives the music video forward as there is a clear story that the audience can follow.
There is no clear resolution at the end of the video; we see him end the affair with the girl but his actual girlfriend has already discovered the affair and the video ends with him chasing his girlfriend down the hallway. This leaves the audience with a question - what will happen now ?
Editing
The music is at quite a slow/moderate tempo so there aren't many cuts; usually fades however, when there are cuts, most of them are to the music. The editing is invisible and follows most of the rules of continuity.
Camera Movement and framing
- close-ups of the artist, mid-shots and long-shots
- the performance of the artist is either a close-up or a long, body shot
- not a lot of camera movements; just slow pans
- there are close-up frames of the artist that seem to be the most important and are repeated.
- the diegesis is slowly revealed; they arrive at the hotel, we see that he doesn't want to be there, we realise he has been having an affair with one girl at the hotel and so on...

Music Video - Goodwin Analysis
Day 26 - Since You've Been Gone
The genre it represents is R&B Boy Band and this is shown by:
- beauty shots
- looking directly at camera
- night-time city with bright lights
- coordinated style/ band image
- shots of individual band members
- shots with entire band together
- both fades and some cuts to beat
- females but not presented as sexualised objects
- singing directly to camera
- emotion shown on faces
- some choreographed dance moves but looks natural
What is the relationship between the lyrics and visuals?
This music video is mostly performance and the narrative it does have is slightly illustrative of the lyrics of the song. The song is about the feelings of a man who has just broken up with his girlfriend/wife and wants her back.
At the end of the video, we see the band exit the elevator and see their partners - this is indication that the partners were gone which is illustrative of the lyrics.
However, the video doesn't make many references to the lyrics, it is mostly showing off the band as this is their first music video.
What is the relationship between the music and visuals?
In some places, the video cuts to the beat of the music, however there are a lot of quick fades to black and then to the next shot. This type of editing fits in with the moderate tempo, genre and theme of the song.
The solo instrumental bit at the beginning of the video is illustrated by a "helicopter ride" shot of New York, beauty shots of the band and introducing the location; a hotel where we see the band pull up in a car and enter the building.
During the bridge of the song which is slightly faster paced, the pace of the video also increases. This happens when Robert is playing the piano during the hook and the shots cut faster.
Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs?
The record company is looking to sell this track as the introduction of the band and as a taster to things that the audience can expect from them.
The band is shown as sexy and cool. The video contains so many beauty shots of the members of the band.
The videos for tracks by this artist are quite similar to this one; they contain many beauty shots as well as females but there isn't a lot of emphasis on the females. The main part of the music video is the band and promoting their image.
Is there reference to the notion of looking?
There are quite a few notions of looking; especially the females looking at the band members but as this music video is their debut video, there are mostly shots of the band singing and looking directly to camera.
Is this music video performance-based, narrative-based or concept-based?
It could be said that there is a small amount of narrative in this video but overall it is performance based.

Music Video - Genre Analysis
One of the most important things a music video must have in order to be successful is genre signifiers. Without these, the music video may not reach its target audience and therefore will not fulfil its purpose of promoting the music and the artist.
There are many genre signifiers within this music video:
- darkness
- night-time city scene
- pale female singer with dark hair, piercings
- contrasting colours - black and white and red
- "haunting" voice
- male band - jeans, black t-shirts, tattoos, piercings
- guitars and drums
- "aggressive" movements and dancing
- male lead singer - tattoos, dyed hair, piercings
- "screaming" singing
- white theme
- emphasis on clothes, jewellery and flashy cars - to show money
- sexualised image of women
- "pimp" cane
- man with women following him, attending to his every need
- the females are looking at him
- females in bikinis and scantily dressed - seen as objects
- females in lingere with dog collars

A few track options...
Here are some tracks that we could consider for the music video...
The artist of this song is Stevie Hoang who is a London R&B singer. He has now been signed to a label but I did follow his music a few years back before this happened.

Alicia Keys - Element of Freedom
- the main image is a large off centred image of artist with eyes closed, subtle make-up - creates a sense of calm and relaxation. She is wearing a dress of colourful feathers which is a reference to birds which can be seen as a symbol of freedom (especially in the US)
- Different shades of purple "mountains" in background, purple to white sky, clouds all adds to the calm feel of the album cover.
- Large "Broadway" font, white - "Alicia Keys"
- "the element of" purple font, different sizes, "element" is larger to show that it is the most important word.
- "freedom" purple, large, stylised calligraphy font.
- "ALICIA KEYS" - large font and right next to artist's face - gives her an identity and confirms that it is her album.
- "the element of FREEDOM" - freedom is in a different font which can symbolise her freedom from conformity and independence as an established artist in the industry
- the CD is purple with images of birds - still fits in with the theme of the front cover.
- same colours and fonts for "Alicia Keys, Element of Freedom"
- shows executive producers
- copyright
- record label "Sony Music" logo
- The back cover remains with the same themes - purple, white, blue, black. White sky, with a white dove which is a worldwide recognised symbol of freedom.
- has a bar-code
- track listing
- executive producers
- websites the consumer can visit - aliciakeys.com (artist's website), myspace/aliciakeys (artist's myspace), keepachildalive.org - shows that the artist is charitable and if the consumer enjoys the songs on the album, they have ways to listen to more via internet.
- copyright
- record label "Sony Music" logo
- the bird iconography with the purple colour scheme - calm and relaxation which could indicate a soul, R&B album
- closed eyes of artist with serene facial expression - she is a refined, developed, established artist in the industry and she doesn't feel that she needs gimmicks.
- overall, this album cover indicates a mainstream album from a developed artist. The potential/ target audience would be a mainstream audience that is familiar with the artist.

Group Ideas
For this music video project, I want to work with Catharrin.
Album Cover Analysis
The purpose of an album cover is to promote the album and sell the artist. It needs to have features that will appeal to the specific target audience and illustrate the genre but album covers usually have similar features:
- image of artist (depending on genre)
- artwork
- artist name
- album name
- track list
- record company name and logo
- websites
- maybe images, artist name and album name
- a recurring theme to the front cover

What Music Means to Us...
We had our presentations where we were able to listen to people's choices about their music and what music means to them. It was interesting to see where people's choices came from and the pleasures they associate with their music.
Most people listen to music on their own or with groups of friends and they consume the music in a variety of ways; ipod, internet, television, mobile phones.
The most common pleasures associated with music is emotion and there was a definate pattern in the choices of music; school trips, childhood memories, television, films, etc.
This exercise was relevant to our project because we were able to see how different music tastes are influenced and how music is usually consumed. It'll be really useful to use this information when deciding on our target audience.

Intertexuality in Music Videos ...

What Music Means To Me...
I fell in love with this song when watching the TV show "So you think you can dance" and saw this brilliant routine. Just like a music video does, the dance really portrayed the emotions in the song and it gave me chills the first time I watched it as I thought of the times I have wanted something that wasn't good for me.
